A Nightmare in Snow

A Nightmare in Snow

It was winter and we had so much snow, so my brother and I went to the toboggan hill to toboggan. I was 5 and my brother was 6 years old. It was a very cold but sunny day and there were so many children from our village to have fun. Some children had skis or glide shoes but we had a sledge. Well, we had much fun the whole day until something had happened.

I stood on the hill and looked at my brother while he was tobogganing with our big sledge with a green rope. When he stopped down the hill I could see that an older boy was walking towards my brother. He was maybe one head taller than my brother. Then I saw that the older boy pushed my brother so hard that he fell down into the snow then the boy beat my brother and stole our big sledge. This moment I realized, what happened and ran as fast as I could down the hill towards my brother. We tried to run afterwards the boy to get our big sledge back but we were not quick enough. I was crying and my brother looked very sad.

After a while we were thinking, we couldn’t go home without our big sledge. How could we explain to our parents what had happened? So I made a plan and told my brother, he listened very carefully and said to me: “That sounds good”.

It started to get dark and we knew, my parents come home from work when it gets dark, so we had to shake a leg.

Well, we ran to the kindergarden, which was just around the corner, so very close to the toboggan hill and we stood behind the fence. In winter children come to the kindergarden with their own sledge and parked it next to the entrance down the step. I reminded my brother that he had to look for a very big sledge with a green rope. That sounded easier as it was. So we opened the gate, went into the kindergarden and looked for a sledge. It was really hard to find one that looked similar to our sledge and when we found one, then unfortunately there was a name engraved. And all the time we had a bad conscience because our sledge was stolen and now we stole another child’s sledge or people could see that we were thieves and could catch us.

Finally, we found a suitable sledge with a green rope (we thought) and went home. All the excitement was over for a little while. We were lucky that my parents came home after us. My parents asked us how our day was and we answered that we had an ordinary day like every day.

My mum prepared our supper and during this time my father was in the garage where we parked our sledge. Suddenly we heard my father shouting our names very loudly and we were petrified. What will happen next we thought but there was no time to think about it?
He walked very fast towards our bedroom with my mum and the trouble began again………………………………………………………Christmas Eve we got a new sledge and both of us had our own sledge and my dad engraved our names.

We never found out who had stolen our very big sledge with the green rope but we brought the sledge back that we had stolen.
